One of the most intriguing challenges in lighting design is stepping into a space not originally conceived with professional illumination in mind. I recently encountered this firsthand with a city square where the existing lighting was, to put it mildly, problematic. It suffered from inadequate and dazzling illumination, creating uncomfortable glare that diminished the overall experience of the space.
Beyond the discomfort, the square’s lighting failed to highlight its most valuable assets. The facades of the notable buildings remained unvalorized, lost in the visual clutter. Moreover, the excessive light contrast within the square compromised both its safety and aesthetic appeal. Such an environment not only feels jarring but can also create visual traps and dark spots, posing a risk to pedestrians.
Thankfully, a new lighting scheme for this significant public space is set to be implemented shortly. The goal is to transform the square into a welcoming, safe, and visually stunning area, where architectural beauty is celebrated and light guides rather than blinds.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project!
